K (2005)

Portrait of a Drugs and Prostitution Scene

K is really just another Berlin street. Office worker Norbert has taken a trip here without being able to say exactly what for. Manuela, unemployed, needs twenty-five euros. Digger driver Horst is here to pursue his hobby. Pensioners Kalle and Heinz just want to have a look, although there is nothing to see. Policeman Harry finds evidence of substance abuse. Mahmud is here to sell drugs. Sebastiano is here to buy drugs – with the cash that Angie earns here. School student Karin sometimes wonders why she is walking this street.

An angel of sorts – or is she a prostitute herself? – speaks to them all, sometimes offering comfort, sometimes cynically harsh. She visits the girls on the kerbside, stands guard over the sex in Norbert’s car, hovers in the underground car park and the Turkish takeaway and observes Lisa as she puts on her makeup in her back-yard flat. K uncovers aspects of life that otherwise remain unseen.
