Kabul Cronies (2003)
German Soldiers amongst Beer Cans and Missiles
At Christmas 2001, when the German Bundestag voted to send troops to Afghanistan with the ISAF mission, none of the soldiers really knew what to expect.
It’s very quiet in the bus right now. These German soldiers have just landed at an airport in Afghanistan. They are driving to Camp Warehouse near Kabul. Once they arrive, they will settle into a camp that is strictly isolated from the outside world. A reporter »who never served, asks daft questions and can’t tell a corporal from a brigadier« questions them about their lives and accompanies them into action.
On patrol, they don’t normally meet many people; only children and young men are curious enough to come close. Kabul Cronies describes the barely surmountable contrast between the soldiers’ routines and another reality beyond the camp fence.
