A Marish Dream of Paradise (2005)

The Tale of Pozuzo, A Jungle Village

Over a hundred and fifty years ago, a newspaper ad appeared in Tirol.
Many were of the opinion that God had placed it, but it was the Peruvian government, in search of devout Catholics for a settlement programme. Three hundred peasants without land, craftsmen without work and sweethearts without permission to marry were chosen to travel to a paradise which – they were assured – was located in Peru and went by the name of Pozuzo, a remote valley in the mists of the jungle.

Their journey lasted two years and only half of them ever arrived. A Marish Dream of Paradise tells of an adventurous settlement, of the isolated life of its settlers, and of how life in Pozuzo made a great leap forward with the construction of a road. Even so, occasional descendants of those Austrians and Germans, elderly people with a peculiar dialect and idiosyncratic memories, are still living hidden away among the wonders of a primeval rainforest.
